Largely due to the acquisition of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, the 07/08 Celtics will be a very different team to the 06/07 squad. Kevin Garnett in the low post, Ray Allen at the perimeter, and Paul Pierce in the key or high post all at the same time will present a real problem for any opposing team. The only other teams with so many superstars in the roster are
Boston GM Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers are currently facing questions about who will play the point. Some say Ray Allen should do it, while others argue that Rajon Rondo should play PG. What concerns many is that Rondo, who will this season be playing his 2nd year in the NBA, is too young and inexperienced to be a starting PG.
Ainge has hinted that the offense will run primarily through Garnett at the low post and Pierce at the high post, probably with Ray Allen on the 3 pt line and Tony Allen contributing some baskets from in and around the paint.
If I were Doc Rivers, I would start Kendrick Perkins at center, Kevin Garnett at power forward, Paul Pierce at small forward, Ray Allen at shooting guard and Rajon Rondo at point guard. James Posey would occasionally start as a forward or guard, and be the sixth man when not starting.
Rondo may be young, but the kid deserves a chance to prove himself. The Celtics should let him play the point for a couple of games, and if things don’t work out, switch Tony Allen to starting point guard, let Ray Allen play as a combination guard and bring on James Posey to help out when necessary. That said, Rondo has some work to do on his shot before he can be let loose as PG.
I, and most basketball bloggers and analysts, will be watching Rajon Rondo closely for the first couple of weeks during the season. You gotta give the kid some credit, he is under a lot of pressure for someone so young, and if it turns out he isn’t ready, the Celtics have other options.
If he succeeds, I can see
