Marion to Lakers?

Kobe Bryant has demanded that the Lakers do something to improve their roster this off season. So far, they have signed a couple of players, but have not brought any major stars. Their were rumours of Jermaine O’Neal being traded to LA, but that no longer seems as likely. Kobe has been reported to want a trade to Chicago or New York, but realistically, the Lakers won’t want to be trading away the top scorer in the league last season and the face of their franchise.

But if they do nothing, Kobe is likely to demand a trade again, a stance which he has softened in recent weeks. Trading Kobe might not be such a bad idea, as LA could get a superstar, but not a young guy. An attempt to trade Kobe for D-Wade, LeBron, Gilbert Arenas or Carmelo Anthony would most likely be refused by the other teams.

However, a solution is still possible. Now, the most likely trade is Lamar Odom to Phoenix in exchange for Shawn Marion to the Lakers. Marion is “definitely interested” in the Lakers, and the combination of Kobe leading the offense and Marion leading the defense is quite threatening. However, there are three problems with such a trade that cannot be overlooked.

1) The Lakers would have to prove to Phoenix that Lamar Odom has fully recovered from his shoulder injury. There is no way the Suns would be prepared to lose Shawn Marion so they can be stuck with a player who will miss a lot of games due to injuries.

2) Phoenix and LA Lakers are in the same division. If Marion thrives in Los Angeles as Kobe’s right hand man, the Suns’ chances of the division title would be jeopardized, while the Lakers could cause trouble if the meet Phoenix in the playoffs.

3) While Lamar Odom is a highly skilled player, Shawn Marion’s tenacious defense is matched by few in the league. Phoenix would have to be sure that they would replace Marion on defense.

If Phoenix can get past those 3 issues, the Suns could shed a couple of million of their payroll, as Marion earns $16 000 000 per season while Odom earns $13 000 000.

Enough of this absurd lawsuit

Ok, enough is enough. As much as I view Isiah Thomas as a mediocre coach and GM, this sexual harassment issue is getting ridiculous.

According to one of Isiah’s defense lawyers, Sue Ellen Eisenberg, Anucha Browne Sanders should not be suing Thomas at all. “Isiah did not hire her, he did not fire her, he never said he was in love with her and he never ever sexually harassed Ms. Browne Sanders.” Knicks guard Stephon Marbury has labelled the lawsuit as a “joke” and I can understand why he feels this way. Browne Sanders has brought Marbury’s private life into this lawsuit, which is irrelevant to Thomas’ alleged improper behaviour.

So Stephon Marbury had sex with an intern. That is irrelevant to the complaints of Anucha Browne Sanders. That intern consented, and last time I checked, there is nothing illegal about two people having consensual sex. It is none of Anucha’s business who Marbury has sex with, and it appears that she is looking for dirt to make her case stronger, regardless of whether the dirt is relevant. Stephon Marbury’s private life has nothing to do with this case, and Browne Sanders should get back on topic and stop wasting everybody’s time.

Kathleen Decker, the woman he had sex with, not only testified in court that the sex was consensual, but told the court that Browne Sanders was ‘mean’ to her when she was describing her night with Marbury. Despite the fact that the incident was none of her business and is irrelevant to the issue at hand, the Judge has allowed Browne Sanders to make a mockery of the justice system by introducing so many allegations, which lack evidence and have little relevance.

An expert lawyer, Ron Kuby, has stated that “Generally speaking, crude and vulgar language is not a part of a sexual harassment case”, and that “if you removed the f-word and the b-word, this trial would be cut in half.” The same article reports that MSG Sports chief executive, Steve Mills, testified in court and claimed that he had never heard Isiah use the b-word. He went further and denied that Browne Sanders’ charges are untrue.

Isiah has many witnesses who protest his innocence, while Browne Sanders’ arguments often involve alleged incidents unrelated to this case. One such allegation is that Thomas instructed a Knicks cheerleader to flirt with a referee before a match. While this could be true, it is unconnected to this case. Browne Sanders is bringing up so much irrelevant crap, and this trial is going to slowly, that a juror actually fell asleep.

My view is that Anucha Browne Sanders were fired because her bosses viewed her as the incompetent troublemaker that she is, and now she is looking for revenge. This woman wanted Isiah Thomas to hand sign 4500 letters to fans encouraging them to buy tickets. Her incompetence is noticeable to anyone when this is mentioned. Doesn’t she realise that NBA coaches have more important things to do than sign letters? They get paid to coach, not sign letters.

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated wrote: “By my estimation, in the nearly three hours Browne Sanders was cross-examined by Garden attorneys, she revealed that she thought Knicks assistant coach Herb Williams was "too nice" and that Thomas might have too close a relationship with Stephon Marbury. Shocking revelations.” I can understand why he, and many other journalists, have had enough. This trial is absurd, and no longer entertaining.

Perhaps we should put this trial in front of Judge Judy, televise it, and watch the Judge tell Browne Sanders’ that her allegations are laughable, and her case utterly ridiculous. The fact of the matter is that Madison Square Garden fired an incompetent employee. Browne Sanders should get over it, and stop trying to bring everyone down with her.

Video of the week - 720 dunk

This week, I have chosen a 720 slam dunk as the video of the week. No, I’m not kidding. AND1’s Taurian Air up there Fontenette really did do a 720. It was in a game too, not in a dunk contest.

720 dunk

Insane, isn’t it? I’d like to see Vince or Kobe try and top that.

Revival of the Trojans

The USC Trojans are best known for their highly successful football program. However, USC is not only a football school. In the past few years, the Trojans basketball program has fallen on hard times, failing to make the NCAA Division 1 basketball tournament in 2006, 2005, 2004 and 2003. Now, things are starting to turn around.

In the 2007 NCAA tournament, the USC basketball team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, losing to the University of North Carolina, one of the top teams in the nation. Tim Floyd worked some magic and was able to achieve an excellent result, considering the fact that USC did not qualify for the tournament in 2006.

The Pac-10 conference, of which USC is a member, is incredibly tough and includes many strong basketball schools, including UCLA, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State and up-and-coming Washington State. Pac-10 just got even tougher because of one 19 year old. His name? O.J. Mayo, from Huntington HS in West Virginia. Last year, Mayo was arguably the best high school player in the USA. If you don’t believe me, this video should convince you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RKoXNToOnk

That was O.J. Mayo’s last dunk in the State Championships. UCLA, Arizona and the other basketball powerhouses in the Pac-10 conference better start preparing. What was once an inferior team now poses a serious challenge to the UCLA Bruins’ traditional dominance.

Now that he has enrolled at USC, the Trojans have a much better chance than they had at the last tournament. Without Mayo, the Trojans were able to make the Sweet Sixteen. Next time, with O.J. Mayo leading the team, USC will be expected by many to achieve a spot in the Elite Eight. I have no doubt that the current Trojans team has the ability to go that far, and the university should have no problem putting asses in seats at the Galen Center.

Chris Webber to Mavericks?

Rumours are circulating about the future of free agent Chris Webber. It is highly unlikely that Webber will play for Detroit this season, and fans are wondering where he will end up.

In a recent interview with The Dallas Morning News, Mavs coach Avery Johnson was asked
If you had to make a gut guess right now, would Chris Webber or P.J. Brown end up in a Mavericks uniform this season?” Johnson's response is what has got rumours going again. “Ooh, I hope so. But we'll have to wait and see. Either of those guys would be a tremendous asset in terms of a role-playing guy for a team. But they have some other opportunities that they're looking at. So we'll have to wait and see.

Chris Webber or P.J. Brown would be a much better option for the Mavericks, whose current centers, Desagna Diop, Erick Dampier and
Didier Ilunga-Mbenga, leave much to be desired. In the 2007 playoffs, Diop averaged 3.5 ppg and 6.8 boards, while Dampier averaged 1 point and 3.4 boards. Ilunga-Mbenga averaged less than 1 point and 1 rebound. In contrast, Webber averaged 9.9 ppg and 6.3 boards during the playoffs, while Brown averaged 8.3 ppg and 4.7 rpg.

Webber and Brown are also both highly experienced players, who could act as mentor to younger players, especially for rookie forwards Reyshawn Terry and Nick Fazekas. An experienced center would also free up Dirk Nowitzki to take a couple more midrange and 3 point shots which is important as Dirk is arguably the best shooting big man

The Mavs should attempt to get rid of either Dampier,Diop or Ilunga-Mbenga, and bring in Webber or Brown. Preferably, Dallas could trade two bad centers and end up with one good center, one not so good. At the moment they have three somewhat unskilled centers and the Mavs' front office should be doing everything possible to fix the situation.

Russia wins Eurobasket, qualifies for Olympics

Andrei Kirilenko has scored 17 points to lead Russia to victory against host nation Spain. Russia’s national team has now qualified for the Olympics, as has Lithuania’s after finishing 3rd. Spain qualified in 2006 after winning the world championship.

J.R. Holden's jumper with 2.1 seconds left secured Russia their first-ever EuroBasket title with a thrilling 60-59 victory over reigning world champions and hosts Spain.

Pau Gasol had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but his mid-range jumpshot went in and out, leaving Spain to collect their sixth European silver medal.

Andrei Kirilenko collected Most Valuable Player honours for the tournament after collecting 17 points, five rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and a steal with 59 seconds remaining.

That swipe led to a basket by Nikita Morgunov to pull Russia to within 59-58 with 43 seconds to play.

Holden grabbed his own steal with 28 seconds left against Gasol in the post.

The American-born guard shook himself open and launched a long jumper which hit the rim and came back down in.

The crown was Russia's first ever after the Soviet Union won 14 European gold medals. It was also their third medal overall following silver in 1993 and bronze in 1997.

Spain's silver medal goes with those from 1935, 1973, 1983, 1999 and 2003.

Holden finished with eight points while Aleksey Savrasenko scored 10 points and Victor Khryapa collected seven points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot before fouling out with four minutes to go.

"Hopefully this will be the first of many titles. Spain are a great team, but we just played really well tonight," said Kirilenko. "We made Spain nervous and we played as a team. I might be the MVP but it's been a team effort all the way."

Gasol finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots but the NBA superstar also missed five of eight foul shots in the fourth quarter (5-of-12 overall) and committed five turnovers.

"You must understand that today is a very sad day for us. I admit I wasn't at my best. But I take responsibilty for that," Gasol said. "On the last shot, I thought I saw the ball going in, maybe I should have taken another step forward."

Jose Calderon scored a team-high 15 points while Jorge Garbajosa added eight points and six rebounds.

Congratulations to the Russians. They earned their place in Beijing. Eurobasket is very tough, with top teams such as Spain, France, Italy and Greece all competing. Greece, Germany, Croatia and Slovenia will make a final attempt to qualify at the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in July 2008.
